If you’re facing a tooth extraction and dreading the idea of walking around with a gap for months, there’s an option worth knowing about. Sunbury Dental House offers
immediate dental implants, which means the implant can be placed directly into the extraction site during the same appointment as the extraction itself.
It’s not the same as the “teeth in a day” concept you might have seen advertised elsewhere.
Immediate implants are specifically about replacing a tooth and its root at the point of extraction, rather than waiting months for the socket to heal first. For the right candidate, it can significantly reduce the overall treatment timeline while helping preserve the bone and gum tissue around the site.
How Is This Different from Traditional Implants?
With a traditional implant approach, you’d have the tooth extracted, wait three to six months for the site to heal, then have the implant placed in a separate surgery. After that, another healing period before the final crown goes on. It works well, but it’s a long road.
With
immediate implants, the extraction and implant placement happen in one visit. A temporary crown may also be fitted on the same day, depending on how stable the implant is in the bone. That “may” is important though. Not every immediate implant can support a temporary tooth straight away, and your dentist will assess this during the procedure.
Either way, your permanent crown is fitted later, once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone. That typically takes three to six months.
Are You a Candidate?
Here’s the honest part. Not everyone is suitable for
immediate implants, and that’s actually a sign of a practice doing things properly. Placing an implant into a fresh extraction site requires specific conditions:
- Adequate bone: You need enough healthy bone around the extraction site to hold the implant securely from day one. If there’s been significant bone loss, a staged approach with grafting may be the better option.
- No active infection: The extraction site needs to be free of infection. Active infections can compromise how well the implant integrates with the bone.
- Good oral health overall: Untreated gum disease needs to be managed first. Healthy gums and good hygiene habits support long-term implant success.
- Commitment to aftercare: Immediate implants require strict dietary restrictions (soft foods for several weeks) and careful post-operative care during the critical healing period.
At Sunbury Dental House, the assessment includes 3D imaging to evaluate your bone quality, infection status, and overall suitability. It’s thorough, it takes about 90 to 120 minutes, and it’s the reason outcomes are predictable rather than hopeful.
What Does the Process Actually Look Like?
Consultation and planning. Your first visit is complimentary. The team takes detailed 3D scans, evaluates your case, and discusses whether immediate placement is appropriate. If it is, a personalised treatment plan is created before anything starts.
Extraction and placement day. The tooth is carefully removed and the implant is placed into the extraction site in the same appointment. This typically takes two to three hours. Sedation options are available, including IV sedation and in-house general anaesthesia for patients who need it.
Temporary restoration. If the implant is stable enough, a temporary crown may be placed the same day. If not, a temporary solution is arranged while the implant heals.
Healing. The first two to four weeks involve close monitoring, dietary restrictions, and regular check-ups. The implant gradually fuses with the bone over the following months.
Final crown. Once integration is confirmed (usually three to six months), your permanent crown is created and fitted with attention to function and how it looks alongside your other teeth.
What Are the Risks?
Like any surgical procedure,
immediate implants carry risks. These include swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgery, minor bleeding during initial healing, infection at the implant site (uncommon but possible), risk of implant failure if integration doesn’t occur, and nerve or sinus involvement depending on where the implant is placed.
Your dentist will discuss these with you in detail during your consultation. Honest risk disclosure is part of how we work.
What About the Investment?
Immediate implant fees depend on the complexity of your case and what type of restoration is needed. Rather than quoting a figure that might not apply to your situation, we provide a personalised quote after your consultation.
