All-on-4®
All-on-4® at Sunbury, Gisborne & Diggers Rest
What is All-on-4®?
All-on-4® is a term used to describe when four dental implants are used to support a prosthesis to replace anywhere from 10 to 14 teeth. Implants are made of titanium and fixed into the densest part of the bone for superior support, and are a cost-effective approach to traditional dental implants. And most people find they are more comfortable and convenient than dentures. They are generally used for missing teeth off the front top and bottom arches.

Benefits of All-on-4®
This dental procedure is appealing for those who are missing multiple teeth and would prefer an effective yet low-maintenance option to costlier procedures. Here are just some of the benefits our patients love:
Can be an option for those with insufficient jawbone density for traditional dental implants
All work is completed in a week or less
They stay in place, unlike traditional dentures
They restore bite-force, meaning you can eat the way you would with your natural teeth
Oral hygiene and maintenance are the same as your natural teeth, so they are easier to take care of than traditional dentures
They last for decades
You get a comfortable and stable fit, so they feel like your natural teeth
They look great, especially if your previous teeth were severely damaged or missing
More cost effective than separate implants
They can slow or may even stop bone loss
Am I a Candidate for the All-on-4® Treatment?
The system is designed for people who have lost most or all of their teeth, especially on the front upper and lower arches. If you have experienced bone loss in the jaw, you may have been told that dental implants cannot be supported, but the All-on-4® treatment is different, so you may be a candidate.
This procedure requires less surgery and money than many individual implants, so if time or budget are a concern, this may be the option for you. When you come to visit, our gentle, experienced and caring team of professionals will do a full evaluation and go over all treatment options that are right for you. And don’t worry, they will discuss budget too, so you can be confident that you are getting the best procedure for your needs.

Recovery and Maintenance
You will need a few days to recover, as with any surgery. Each case is unique to the patient, so your team of gentle and compassionate dental professionals will have specific recommendations for your needs. But there are some general instructions that anyone can benefit from:
Have someone drop you off and pick you up the day of the procedure, as effects of sedation may take some time to wear off
Do not smoke, as it can interfere with recovery and increase the failure rate of implants
Do not drink through a straw
Avoid very hot food
Follow the specific diet you are given
Try to not blow your nose or sneeze with a lot of pressure; if you do, keep your mouth open to avoid pressure in the sinus area
Do not move lips to see the sutures as it could tear them
Take any prescribed medication as instructed
Get plenty of rest
There may be some swelling, which is normal. But, applying an ice pack on the side of your face with the swelling for 15 minutes at a time throughout the day can significantly help reduce it. After the first two days, a warm compress can ease swelling. Some patients may experience bruising, which is also temporary and normal.
Maintenance is also very unique and according to the patient’s specific procedure. But, in general, you will continue a daily oral hygiene routine and do your best to clean around the teeth. Most dentists recommend not removing the prosthesis for daily cleaning, as it can weaken the base. An exam every few months or once a year will allow your dental professional to do a thorough cleaning and catch any problems. Your doctor will go over the best maintenance care for your new prosthesis.
