What kind of dental fillings do you offer?

The filling materials used depends on the extent of tooth decay and damage. Amalgam or mercury fillings don’t bond to the teeth as well as other fillings do, which can leave the tooth open to further damage and cracking. Therefore incorporate modern materials, like composite or porcelain fillings, that better protect the tooth from further cracking and blend in with the tooth’s colour and shape.

What fillings do you use?

The choices offered at Sunbury Dental include composite and porcelain fillings, unlike amalgam or mercury fillings, they bond to the tooth surface, which strengths the teeth rather than weaken it. They are also white and natural in colour, we can blend it with the colour of you natural teeth, which provides a much aesthetic result.

Composite Fillings

also called white fillings, are made of a tooth coloured plastic/glass material. They offer a moderate-term solution and last anywhere from 5-8 years and can be moulded for a comfortable fit.

Porcelain Fillings

are definitely the best choice when it comes to dental fillings. Porcelain fillings are made from ceramic, which is one of the strongest material available. Overall, it looks nicer and is environmentally friendlier than amalgam. What patients enjoy most about porcelain fillings is they don’t stain, and we can provide colour customization, so they blend in naturally with the rest of your teeth. The expected lifespan of a porcelain filling is 10-15 years.

Indirect Same Day Porcelain Fillings

are fillings that are shaped and moulded outside of the mouth. Normally, you would need two visits for this process over 10-14 days, but at Sunbury Dental, we make it easy. During your visit, we will prepare the tooth and take a 3D scan. Then we use our in-house Cerac machine to prepare a custom, porcelain mould while you relax. When the filling it ready, we apply it for you on the spot. The entire process lasts 1 ½ to 2 hours, saving you multiple trips, time and money. You are left with a new looking tooth and a filling that is comfortable and blends in beautifully. If you are busy with work and family, or if you are afraid of going to the dentist, this is the ultimate solution to fix your teeth.

Gold Fillings

are still the ‘gold standard’ in dentistry. Whilst it isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing filling material, they do last the longest of all fillings. Sometimes gold is the best option to choose if your tooth is significantly weakened.

What if I have too much tooth decay?

Sometimes the cavity is too large, or the damage is too much for a typical inlay filling. Our friendly staff does a full assessment with photos and a personalised plan before we begin work, so we are prepared for any scenario. If a nerve is injured, we can perform a root canal. Often, this procedure makes a patient feel anxiety, but the dentists at Sunbury Dental utilise the latest advancements in minimal discomfort dentistry to ensure you remain comfortable and at ease. Once the root canal is complete, we then build up any remaining tooth with porcelain or composite restorations. We keep you informed so that, together, we use the best procedure for the situation. And because we use the latest methods and equipment, not only is your visit comfortable, but will be done with minimal downtime.

Porcelain -Dental Fillings - Sunbury, Gisborne & Diggers Rest - Sunbury Dental House

*Despite Amalgam lasting a long time, they do not chemically bond to the tooth, leading to internal stresses and cracks especially in back teeth. Some of the cracks are visible, other cracks are hidden under the filling and cannot be detected. Commonly alot of these teeth fracture leading to the loss of the tooth completely. They also contain mercury, whilst there is no scientific evidence that suggest the mercury in dental fillings are poisonous, it is environmentally toxic. For the reason above, we do not stock or use amalgam or silver fillings.
Whether its Composite, Porcelain/Ceramic, or gold fillings require maintenance. Just like you maintain a car after the purchase, you can maintain your dental work to ensure it lasts a long time, while you protect your teeth from further damage. We will design a protocol for you with a schedule of regular brushing, flossing as needed and cleaning. We may recommend a guard, if you grind your teeth, to protect your dental fillings and healthy teeth. And, of course, we prefer you don’t do silly things to chip your teeth or harm your dental work, like opening beer bottles with your teeth.

What about children?

Healthy teeth are important to avoid future pain and illness and for a child’s self-esteem, but we understand some children may be apprehensive about dental visits. Sunbury Dental knows that early dental experiences last a lifetime, so we strive to put your child at ease to make their visit as comfortable and educational as possible. We are careful to not begin any procedure until your child is confident and relaxed. And be assured that helping children and families develop positive attitudes about dental health is what we do.
