A scale and clean is a professional cleaning appointment where plaque and hardened tartar are removed from your teeth, above and below the gum line, followed by polishing and a preventive assessment. Step one: assessment
Your clinician begins by checking your teeth and gums, noting any areas where plaque and tartar have built up and any spots where your gums bleed or have pulled away from the teeth. This is also where early signs of gum disease are picked up, often before you would notice anything yourself.
Step two: scaling
Scaling removes the deposits your toothbrush cannot. Plaque is the soft film of bacteria that forms daily; when it stays on the teeth it hardens into tartar, which is bonded to the tooth and can only be removed professionally. Your clinician uses an ultrasonic scaler, which vibrates deposits away with a fine water spray, along with hand instruments for precise areas. You will feel vibration and hear a high-pitched hum, but scaling is not drilling and nothing is being cut.
Step three: polishing
Once the deposits are gone, your teeth are polished with a soft rotating cup and a lightly gritty paste. Polishing smooths the tooth surface, removes surface staining from coffee, tea and red wine, and makes it harder for new plaque to attach.
Step four: prevention
Your clinician finishes with fluoride where clinically indicated, tailored advice on brushing and cleaning between your teeth, and a recall interval suited to your mouth rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule.
Does a scale and clean hurt?
