Diamond Grillz Getting Affixed To Teeth For Reasons Still Unknown
Only in America do you find massively over-exposed celebrities paying their dentist to be artist/jeweller affixing precious metal grills to their teeth. The relentless desire to stand out from the crowd has seen the USA’s rap scene embrace a metallic look in the oral cavity. Apparently, the roots of this could possibly be linked to the ‘new savage’ movement. It began, of course in the 1980s with piercings and tattoos. Young folk flocked to parlours where they could be illustrated in ink and pierced in painful places with metallic jewellery. Facial piercings, genital piercings and nipple rings were popular with Generations X, Y, Z. I suppose it was only a matter of time before the desire to adorn body parts focussed onto the teeth.
Grillz Not Grills OK Boomer!!
Call us old fashioned but most Aussies still go to the dentist for largely structural reasons: fillings for cavities and replacing broken teeth with some sort of alternative. However, many of us attend their local dental clinic for cosmetic reasons. You know, teeth whitening and to fix your smile. Tooth tales are turning away from functionality toward appearance, as the dominant driver in going to the dentist. I suppose the natural development from a concern with the visual side of things is to extend into adornments of a non-functional nature. Metal grills with diamonds and sapphires if you are a cashed up popstar. It is Art dude! How cool is that!
“It’s uncertain where grillz are headed. Will they become a must-have accessory for the fashion-forward? Will art-forward pieces dominate the scene? Are bling-encrusted smiles soon to become a staple on the runway? Or will the trend fizzle and grills return to their home of underground street couture? Along with a symbol of status and opulence, there is perhaps a rebellious spirit in the history of grillz. Just as the Roman Empire and the Spanish conquistadors looked down on the dental accessories they found on the conquered, considering them perhaps uncivilised or ritualistic, many in the mainstream would first see grillz and dismiss them as garish, strange, and even tacky. Still, those with a passion for the culture recognised the beauty. And they continue to wear and create them with pride and style.”

The old saying is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How will you feel when your beloved opens their mouth to reveal jaws of platinum or gold? How about the tongue kiss coming up against the cold hard surfaces of metal grillz? Perhaps, contrast is the spice of life? The warm, wet very human qualities of the oral cavity and the chilly, hard surfaces of them grillz. The celebrity dentist is going places that most dentists never envisioned. Of course, charging hundreds of thousands of dollars is always a dentist’s best friend. Kanye West and his daughter North West are just the latest super celebrities to spend up big on metal grillz and jewellery adorned teeth. Their celebrity dentist shared these gems with us:
“Ye (Kanye West) was a pleasure to work with every step of the process,” his dentist, Dr Thomas Connelly, told DailyMail.com. “His vision for designing unique art transcends the dental progression. The marriage of his vision with dental science has created a new look that is epic!” he added. Kanye and North are not the only members of the family to opt for teeth makeovers – Kim is also a fan of a grill.”

Who Gonna Clean The Grill?
We know that the Mayans adorned their teeth with precious jade back in the day down South America way. Rumours have it that the Etruscans may have been into golden grills prior to the rise of the Romans. Vikings and other tribal warriors filed their teeth into fang like manifestations. Ancient legends of the dental realm have revealed this wild side of dentistry. DIY stuff back in archaic times but today we have celebrity dentists taking up the tooth tales mantle. If you have a spare couple of hundred grand you might like to consider dabbling in these dental cosmetic arts. Brushing your teeth must cause a few issues, but perhaps you can pay some minion to do that for you. It is all about the look of course – don’t besmirch it with undue concerns about the practicalities of “grillz lyfe”.
Bling On Teeth
Bling on teeth is nothing new but it may be getting a mouth hold on celebrity culture in the 21C. What does it say to the world at large? I am special! I am different! I fling your materialistic obsession in your face via the $600,000 I spent on my platinum and precious metal grillz! I think of the grill on a motor car and the badge it wears. The shiny metallic surface making a statement. There is nothing understated about bling on teeth. It is a gleaming visual presence in a place not normally known for it.
Wow WTF!!! #FOMO just started costing a whole lot more. And “diamond grillz cost” is trending on Google.
Will your kid come home one day and open wide to smile … right before your eyes, a mass of metal in the mouth hole? Will you be shocked, surprised, or just take it in your stride. Or even, overjoyed for them? Getting ears pierced was one thing, then the nose, maybe a tongue stud, but diamond grillz on the teeth? Will you wonder where they got the dosh to pay for it? Going to the dentist used to be a safe bet but now anything could happen. What will the future hold for dentists and families? Can you still rely on dentists doing the right thing?
