5 Little-Known Tips to Extend the Lifespan of Your Veneers
Hi, Dr Linda here from Sunbury Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
Veneers can completely transform your smile, but like natural teeth, they need the right care to stay looking their best. Most people already know to brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly. But today, I want to share a few lesser-known tips that can really help your veneers last longer.
Let’s start with something simple. The toothbrush you use matters. Veneers are strong, but using a hard-bristled brush or abrasive toothpaste can wear down their polish over time. Stick with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle toothpaste to help keep that smooth, glossy finish.
If you grind your teeth at night, even if you’re not aware of it, it can put a lot of pressure on your veneers. This kind of force can lead to cracks or chips, which no one wants. That’s why we often recommend a custom nightguard to protect your teeth while you sleep.
Here’s another important one. Be careful with what you bite into. Things like ice, hard lollies, or even using your teeth to open packaging can damage your veneers. Try to avoid those habits and treat your smile with a little extra care.

And don’t forget your regular check-ups. Even though veneers don’t decay, the teeth underneath them can. Routine visits help us keep your teeth and gums healthy and make sure everything is still sitting perfectly.
Lastly, while porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, your natural teeth are not. Drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine can create a colour mismatch over time. Using a straw or rinsing with water afterward can help reduce staining and keep your smile looking even.
Veneers are a long-term investment, and with the right care, they can last well over a decade. So, if it’s been a while since your last check-up or you just want to make sure your veneers are holding up well, give us a call on 1800 GENTLE or send us a DM. We’re always happy to help you keep your smile in great shape.
