Hi! Dr Fong here from Sunbury Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
All-on-4 dental implants have truly changed the way we restore full smiles. But like any advanced treatment, long-term success depends on smart planning, the right patient care, and proper aftercare. While the procedure itself is highly effective, it’s still important to understand what can lead to implant failure, and more importantly, how to prevent it.
You see, even though All-on-4 has a very high success rate, there are certain risks to be aware of. One of the most common causes of failure is infection, particularly something called peri-implantitis. This is when bacteria build up around the implants, leading to inflammation and, in some cases, bone loss. The best defence? Consistent oral hygiene at home and regular dental visits.
Another reason implants may fail is poor bone integration. For implants to last, they need to fuse properly with the jawbone. If someone has experienced significant bone loss and doesn’t receive the right preparation like bone grafting, this process can be compromised. That’s why, here at Sunbury Dental House, we always do a thorough assessment of your bone structure before beginning treatment.
Bite pressure is another factor. Patients who grind their teeth or clench heavily can put too much force on the implants, especially while healing. This can cause early failure. In these cases, we often recommend a custom night guard to protect the implants and support healing.
Lastly, your overall health matters. Habits like smoking or uncontrolled medical conditions such as diabetes can affect healing and reduce blood flow to the gums, increasing the risk of complications. It’s essential to have an open conversation with us about your medical history, so we can personalise your treatment for the best possible outcome.
The good news is that most implant failures are preventable with the right planning, treatment, and follow-up care.
If you’re thinking about All-on-4 or you have any concerns about existing implants, we’re here to help.
