Hi! Dr Jimmy here from Sunbury Dental House, part of the Dental House Group.
Do your teeth or gums feel sensitive when you eat or drink something hot or cold? One of the main causes might be exposed tooth roots due to gum recession. So let’s go through a few simple ways to manage that sensitivity and make things a little more comfortable for you.
But first, why does this even happen?
When your gums recede, the roots of your teeth aren’t protected by enamel, unlike the rest of your tooth. So when they’re exposed, they become extra sensitive to temperature changes, sweet foods, and even air.
So, what can you do about it?
For a start, you can switch to a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. These usually contain ingredients like potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride that help block the pathways to the nerves inside your teeth. Just remember, it’s not a one-time fix. You need to use it consistently to feel the difference.
Next, pay attention to your brushing technique.
If you brush too hard or use a hard-bristled toothbrush, it can actually make gum recession worse. Choose a soft-bristled brush and clean your teeth with small, gentle circular motions instead.
You can also try fluoride treatments.
This might be a daily rinse, a gel, or a treatment provided by your dentist. Fluoride helps strengthen your tooth surface and protects those exposed areas from sensitivity.
Your diet matters, too.
Try to limit acidic foods and drinks like citrus, soft drinks, and vinegar-based dressings. These can wear down the exposed root surfaces, making your teeth even more reactive.
And don’t forget the importance of regular hygiene visits.
A professional clean every six months helps remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach, and keeping your gums healthy is the best way to prevent recession from getting worse.
So, if you’re feeling that sting of sensitivity more than usual, it’s worth getting it checked.
